• Dear Shawsheen Parent/Guardians and Colleagues:

We want to provide you with an update regarding Shawsheen’s plans to return to 100% in-person learning.  As we informed you in our email of March 10, 2021, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is requiring school districts to return to 100% in-person learning this school year.  While DESE has still not established a deadline by which high schools must return to 100% in-person learning, we are writing to you today to inform you that Shawsheen Valley Regional Vocational Technical HS will switch to a 100% in-person learning model on Monday, May 3, 2021.

All students who are currently participating in our hybrid model (in-school for shop week and either remote or in-school for academic week) will switch to the 100% in-person model on May 3rd.  All students, except those on Co-op assignments during their shop weeks, will be expected to be physically present in school on that day and every school day until the end of the 2020-2021 school year.  In accordance with DESE guidelines, the smaller subset of students who chose earlier in the school year to be 100% remote for both weeks, will be given the option to either remain 100% remote for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year or can switch to the 100% in-person model effective May 3rd.  We will be sending out a survey to that subset of parents this week asking for your choice.

While the logistics of switching from the hybrid model to the 100% in-person model are complicated, maintaining a safe school environment remains our #1 priority.  Social distancing, mask wearing and the frequent use of hand sanitizer will remain the essential ingredients in achieving that goal.  With the state-wide infection rate continuing to decline, the availability of vaccines for educators continuing to expand, and the opportunity to utilize more outdoor spaces that comes in May and June, we are confident that our transition to 100% in-person learning will be safe.

We will keep you informed as plans progress, but in the meantime, we urge all families to prepare for the return of 100% in-person learning on May 3, 2021.
