• Opening Day Letter from Dr. Jackson and Ms. Cook

    Dear Shawsheen Students and Parents/Guardians,

As Shawsheen prepares to open its door to students for the first time since March, there is an understandable sense of excitement permeating the air.  That excitement is tempered by a feeling of nervousness as we reopen under the cloud of COVID-19 and the myriad of safety restrictions necessary to keep our students and staff safe.  These restrictions have required us to reinvent virtually all operational aspects of the Shawsheen experience, from how students get to school, enter our school, move about our school, eat their lunch, participate in after-school sports and activities, and return home at the end of the day.  At the same time, our teachers have had to reinvent many of their instructional practices, either adjusting their academic lessons for remote participation or modifying their in-person shop instruction to maintain safe social distancing.  Change is everywhere.

With all this change, things will inevitably go wrong – a bus will run late, a network connection will fail, a link to an assignment will be missing or a change to the plan poorly communicated.  When something goes wrong, we’ll make the needed adjustments and move forward.   When you encounter one of these missteps, we encourage you to respond with patience as we work to fix the problem.  We have been overwhelmed by the level of commitment our teachers and administrators have to their craft and to the safety and success of their students.  We urge you to support them with your patience as we work through this “new normal” and re-open Shawsheen safely and effectively.

We are excited to kick-off the 2020-2021 school year tomorrow when we welcome 9th & 11th grade students into the building for shop week, and connect virtually with our 10th & 12th grade students who will be working remotely from home for academic week.  Details regarding what to expect with the return to school were covered in last week’s Back-to-School Presentation, which was posted along with relevant resources, at the following link: Links from the Back to School Presentation on Thursday, September 10, 2020 at 3:00pm

Hopefully you have had a chance to review those materials. For ease of reference, we are including a few key reminders below:

While our students are returning to a “different” Shawsheen, we are both excited by the prospect of seeing half of our students physically enter our school after a six-month hiatus.  We thank you for the patience you’ve shown thus far as we worked to re-design our school experience and for your continued patience as we work through the inevitable challenges we will likely encounter.

    Respectfully,
