SURPLUS SCHOOL PROPERTY DISPOSAL POLICY
The School Committee should be notified whenever equipment or other property owned by the district is deemed by the Superintendent-Director, or their designee, to be surplus and of no further value to the district. After notifying the School Committee, the Superintendent-Director, or their designee, should take the following steps in disposing of such surplus:
- The Superintendent-Director, or their designee, should make every effort to trade-in the equipment toward purchase of new equipment as part of a Chapter 30B bid or proposal, if applicable.
- If trade-in is not practical, surplus equipment and materials will be offered at no charge to the member communities. The Superintendent-Director, or their designee, will share the list of surplus equipment and materials with the Town Mangers from the member communities. The Town Managers will have ten business days to respond.
- If trade-in is not practical and member communities are nonresponsive, equipment will be offered at no charge to other Massachusetts vocational educational facilities with the receiving school responsible for all removal and transportation costs.
- If trade-in is not practical and member community/other vocational educational facilities are nonresponsive, the surplus equipment and materials will be made available for sale at public auction. This includes the use of internet listing services that are open to the general public.
- If the surplus equipment and materials fail to sell, as a final option, equipment and materials will be disposed of at a local salvage yard.
- Proceeds from such sales shall be returned to appropriate accounts based on the recommendation of the Superintendent-Director.
At the completion of the surplus disposal process, the Superintendent-Director, or their designee, will notify the School Committee of the details concerning the disposition of the surplus property.
