Principal's Update - September 2nd, 2021

Dear Shawsheen Students, Parents/Guardians, and Colleagues,

We had a busy and exciting first week back at Shawsheen! On Monday we welcomed 360 freshmen into the Shawsheen community during Freshman Orientation with the support of our upper-class student ambassadors, and we look forward to seeing everything that the Class of 2025 will learn and accomplish over the next four years! On Tuesday, all students attended class meetings to go over information and procedures critical to the start of the school year. Over the course of the week, all students received their school-issued laptops; freshmen and juniors met their academic teachers for this school year; and sophomores and seniors re-connected with their vocational/technical teachers, engaged in safety training and began work on new skills and projects. It has been wonderful to kick off the school year 100% in-person and we look forward to welcoming all students back again next week to a week 2 schedule with sophomores and seniors in academics, and freshmen and juniors in shop.

Shop Exploratory - What to Wear/Bring & Information on Safety Glasses

Freshmen will participate in the first shop exploratory cycle next week and should report to school prepared for their first shop. Please review the 'Shop Exploratory: What to Wear and Bring

' information if you have not done so already. Many shops require safety glasses. Safety glasses will be distributed to all freshmen during shop on Tuesday, September 7. Students are responsible for keeping their safety glasses and bringing them to the shops that require them. The first pair is provided to students for free and it will cost $2.00 to purchase a new pair. I encourage freshmen to have an open mind as they explore through 14 different shops this school year as this opportunity allows students to increase their career awareness and make informed decisions based on their interests and talents. Best of luck to the Class of 2025 as they embark on this exciting experience!

Student Handbook Reminder - Electronic Signature Form due Friday, September 3

Please read the 2021-2022 Shawsheen Valley Technical High School (SVTHS) Student Handbook

and, in lieu of turning in physical copies of the signature pages at the end of the handbook, students and parents/guardians will complete and submit the 2021-2022 SVTHS Student Handbook Electronic Signature Form, which is due by Friday, September 3, 2021. To access this form, students must log into their Microsoft 365 accounts and then students and parents/guardians should complete and submit the form together. Student handbooks (which also function as agenda books and passes for students) will be distributed to students by mid-September. Unfortunately, the company that produces our handbook is experiencing significant shipping delays.

Important SAT Information

2021-2022 SAT Administration Dates and Deadlines

were distributed to seniors during the senior class meeting on Tuesday. Students and families are encouraged to review that information and plan accordingly to ensure no registration deadlines are missed. Please reach out to your guidance counselor for additional information.

School-Issued Laptops

Laptops, laptop chargers, and laptop cases were distributed to all students this week. Students are expected to bring their laptops and chargers to school daily, fully charged, so that they can be used in all of their classes. Please review the Laptop Protocols

distributed by our Educational Technology Department, in addition to the District's Acceptable Use Policy in the SVTHS Student Handbook.

Updated Bus Information

Please visit the 2021-2022 Bus Routes website to see updates, including some adjustments to bus routes, a diagram of where buses park in the rear parking lot for afternoon pick-up, and late bus information for this school year.

Reminder: Junior Photos, Make-up Photos & School IDs

Junior photos and make-up photos are scheduled for Tuesday, September 7. All students are expected to take photos for their school-issued IDs, and those photos are also available for families to purchase from SmilePro. Please note that students are required to have their school-issued IDs with them when at school and at school-sponsored events, and that school IDs must be swiped in the cafeteria when students get breakfast or lunch.

Reminder: School Breakfast & Lunch Program

School breakfast & lunch is free for all students through the end of this school year. Our school breakfast program will begin on Tuesday, September 7. Students can pick-up breakfast in the cafeteria between 7:00am and 7:20am, and students can consume breakfast in the cafeteria or the tent until the homeroom bell rings at 7:25am.

Reminder: No School Tomorrow or Monday

There is no school for students tomorrow, Friday, September 3 and the building is closed for Labor Day on Monday, September 6. We will see all of our students on Tuesday, September 7. Enjoy the long weekend!

Best,

Jessica Cook
