Meningococcal Immunization Requirement

The following message is from our School Nurse Leader, Ms. Nina Brophy:

Please provide your student’s updated immunization record that includes their most recent meningococcal vaccine. See below for specifics:

Per the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, 2 doses of the meningococcal vaccines are required; the second dose MenACWY (formerly MCV4) must be given on or after the 16th birthday and ≥ 8 weeks after the previous dose. 1 dose is acceptable if it was given on or after the 16th birthday. Meningococcal B vaccine is not required and does not meet this requirement.

Please provide this to the nurses’ office by email, fax, or hard copy. Your student’s physician’s office may fax it to the nurses’ office directly.

Medical exemptions (statement from a physician stating that a vaccine is medically contraindicated for a student) and religious exemptions (statement from a student, or parent/guardian if the student is <18 years of age, stating that a vaccine is against sincerely held religious beliefs) should be renewed annually at the start of the school year. If applicable, please send documentation to the nurses’ office.

For more information, please contact the Immunization Division at (617) 983-6800 or visit the MDPH website at Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter. As always, if we can be of any assistance, please call or email School Nurse Liz West or myself.
