Shawsheen Valley Technical High School Celebrates Graduation of 326 Students during Class of 2024 Commencement Ceremony

BILLERICA – On June 6th, Shawsheen Valley Technical High School celebrated the graduation of 326 seniors from the class of 2024. The ceremony took place under clear skies at the campus football field, Alumni Stadium.

Anna Doughty, National Honor Society President, opened the event welcoming the class of 2024, special guests, and families. Following this, SkillsUSA President Lucy Malfy led the Pledge of Allegiance, and senior Christian Rivera delivered an a cappella rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner.

Sarah Johansen, Student Representative to the School Committee and recently honored as a Presidential Scholar, introduced Superintendent Tony McIntosh. McIntosh highlighted the achievements of the graduating class, including military-bound students, six seniors who earned the Seal of Biliteracy, and sixteen SkillsUSA students heading to the national competition. He also noted that students will be attending 118 different colleges and universities in the fall. Additionally, he emphasized the 12,000 hours of work experience completed by the class through Shawsheen’s cooperative education program, which earned them a total of $1,981,735.00.

McIntosh praised the students, saying, “Shawsheen Valley Technical School students are expected to complete their academic studies in half the time of their traditional high school peers, and all of you have met that challenge and found a way to prosper.”

Methun Thayaaparan delivered the Salutatory Address with humor and life lessons. He reminisced about retired teacher Mrs. Hardy, sharing how her biology class taught him resilience after earning his only B. He concluded with, “Live for today, plan for tomorrow, party tonight… Shawsheen Class of 2024, good luck.”

Valedictorian Jasmine Johansen reflected on her time at Shawsheen, particularly highlighting her involvement with SkillsUSA. She spoke about the diverse intelligences among her peers and their excellence in skilled trades, stating, “[Your] smarts are not on paper [but] on pipes, bricks, haircuts, patients, cars, and every other skilled profession.” Johansen concluded with a powerful message: “Understand your greatness in your trade, be proud of your trade, and know your worth. Congratulations, Class of 2024.”

School Committee Member Brian O’Donnell recognized the graduates' achievements, followed by a Farewell Address from Class President Eva Oppedisano. Vice President Allie Oliver thanked class advisors

Sarah Belson and Beverly Robinson, and student council representative June Bardsley recognized Faith Stevens for her consistent contributions to the Parent Advisory Council.

The ceremony concluded with the traditional Turning of the Tassel, marking the end of the students' journey at Shawsheen Tech, followed by a recessional off the field.
