Principal's Update
Friday, April 9, 2021
Dear Shawsheen Students, Parents/Guardians, and Staff,
With one week of school left before April break, I encourage everyone to consult the latest Travel Advisory from the state and to adhere to guidelines in place to limit the spread of COVID-19 so we can continue to keep our community safe and our building open for in-person instruction. We have just over two months left in the school year and I know we all want to finish this year strong!
Permanent Shop Placement - Class of 2024
On Monday, April 12, students in the Class of 2024 will report to their permanent shops for the first time this year! This is always an exciting time at Shawsheen. We are so proud of the effort students put in to increase their career awareness during the exploratory process, and I know our vocational instructors are excited to welcome students into their permanent shops on Monday! Last night, freshman guidance counselors reached out to students in the Class of 2024 to let them know that they could view their permanent shop placements in Aspen. Please contact Ms. Angela Caira (last names A-Q) or Ms. Amanda Samaha (last names R-Z) if you have any trouble accessing that information. Please consult the What to Wear & Bring to Shop Week document to ensure you are prepared for shop on Monday morning.
Update: Prom & Senior Events
Earlier today, Dr. Jackson and I sent a message to seniors and their parents/guardians, outlining our decision to reinstate our plan to have the Senior Prom but move it to a new date, Tuesday, June 8, 2021, after graduation. Please view the full message if you haven't already. Senior Class advisors will be in touch with students soon about this and other events we have planned for seniors at the end of the school year as there have been some changes due to the availability of certain venues as a result of gathering limits put in place by the state. As always, our goal is to find ways to safely celebrate seniors, and I want to remind everyone that all of our plans are tentative as they will be subject to the guidance and restrictions in place at that time, later this spring. Hopefully, things will only improve between now and then!
Quarter 3 Report Cards & Summer School Reminders
Quarter three report cards were published in Aspen yesterday afternoon. Over the coming weeks, we will send summer school information out to students in danger of failing for the year. Summer school is scheduled for June 15 - July 2, 2021. Students can recover credit for a maximum of two courses in summer school in the following major subject areas: English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. Students must have a minimum final average of 45 to be eligible for summer school.
Reminder re: Return to 100% In-Person Instruction on Monday, May 3
As a reminder, there will only be two instructional mode options when we return to 100% in-person instruction on Monday, May 3:
- 100% In-Person Instruction = students will participate in 100% in-person instruction for both shop/co-op weeks and academic weeks
- 100% Remote, In-Home Instruction = students will participate in 100% remote, in-home instruction for both shop/co-op weeks and academic weeks (please note that co-op is an in-person instructional option only)
The hybrid instructional mode option (in-person for shop/co-op weeks and remote for academic weeks) will no longer be an option at that time, and students must remain in the same instructional mode from May 3 until the end of the school year. You can reference our initial announcement on our return to 100% in-person instruction if you haven't already.
