Support Services Department

  • The Support Services Program at Shawsheen provides specialized instruction to students with an identified disability who have been placed by a TEAM on an Individualized Educational Program.  The individualized educational programming follows the guidelines set forth in Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA), the Massachusetts Education Reform Act, and the Massachusetts State Special Education Statute—Chapter 603.  Students are provided small group and individualized instruction by certified Special Needs Staff, based on the recommendations of the TEAM.  Instruction is aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.  Students who receive these services must be diagnosed with one (or more) of the fourteen (14) federally recognized disabilities AND the student must be unable to progress effectively within the general education curriculum without specifically designed curriculum/instruction.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education’s website – www.doe.mass.edu - is a useful source of information for both general and special education. Their website can also link you to other areas of information and resources for families.
