    Principal's Update

    Friday, December 3, 2021

Dear Shawsheen Students, Parents/Guardians, and Colleagues,

I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving break. This week, we returned to school to kick off the 7th exploratory cycle for freshmen (marking the half-way point in the 14-week exploratory program), and we are now a week away from the mid-term for quarter 2. We are proud of how well students are doing as we approach the half-way point of this school year and as we continue to navigate the challenges and uncertainty that exists during this pandemic. As we work to identify and support students who are experiencing anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns during this time, we want to make sure parents/guardians are also aware of resources available to students through Shawsheen and in the wider community. You can learn more by visiting the Student Mental Health and Social-Emotional Wellness page containing information compiled by SVTHS Student Services.

    COVID Updates & Reminders

Please take a moment to read Dr. Jackson's SVTHS COVID Update that was shared via email and text message this morning. I strongly urge all parents/guardians to pay close attention to the section of the update on Test and Stay. This program makes it possible for asymptomatic, in-school close contacts to continue to come to school instead of quarantining. In order to keep COVID case numbers down, keep students in school, and to support our ability to continue to successfully implement this program, I implore all parents/guardians to:

    • provide consent for Test & Stay in advance by clicking this link - it takes considerable time and effort from our School Nursing staff to reach out to parents/guardians for consent each morning, which is required before students can participate in Test and Stay. This delay also causes those students to miss instructional time during the morning while we wait to receive consent from parents/guardians. Please take the time to complete that consent form now, if you have not done so already.
      • When the page appears, select Shawsheen from both drop down menus and then select Sign Consent Form for a Minor.  The consent form will appear on the next page.
      • If you agree, so indicate and then the form will ask you to enter your student’s information.
      • Please note that this is a form used across Massachusetts and it does list all of the possible uses of a Binax-Now test, however, at this time, Shawsheen is ONLY using COVID testing as part of its Test and Stay program.
    • keep your child home if they are exhibiting COVID symptoms, regardless of their vaccination status. The state anticipates a surge in cases as we approach the holidays. Keeping students home when they are exhibiting symptoms will be an essential piece of preventing the spread of COVID at Shawsheen.

SVTHS Fenway Park Project on Channel 10 News

Last Wednesday, Shawsheen students were featured on channel 10 news for the incredible work they did to build a Fenway Park replica in the Masonry shop. We are so proud of these talented students who worked together (from various shops) to create this masterpiece for our annual Open House! Check out the news segment if you haven't already.

    Title I Information

Title I Part A of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act provides financial assistance to districts and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards. Historically, Shawsheen has not qualified to receive Title I funds that can be used for the entire school. Instead we have received targeted assistance, meaning that we can use the funds to support students identified to have the highest needs, based on a range of measures we use to identify those students. With the extra challenges in place last school year, targeted assistance schools had the option of applying for an amendment which, if approved, would allow schools to use funds to support all students. We were approved and received designation as a Title I school. We continue to be designated as a Title I school this year. On November 18, 2021, our Director of Academic Programs, Ms. Danica Johnston, hosted a virtual Title I Parent Meeting. To learn more, you can view this year's Virtual Title I Parent Meeting or read the 2021-2022 Title I Parent Compact.
