    Principal's Update

    Thursday, December 23, 2021

Dear Shawsheen Students, Parents/Guardians, and Colleagues,

I hope everyone enjoys the winter break and is able to rest and safely enjoy time with loved ones. The school will be open for staff only on Monday, January 3, 2022. Students will return to school on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 for a Week 2 schedule with grades 9 & 11 in shop, and grades 10 & 12 in academics. We look forward to seeing students again in the new year!

    COVID Communication During Winter Break

As I mentioned last week, most members of the staff will be enjoying vacation time over winter break and will not be accessible by phone or email. We will be periodically checking the covid@shawtech.org email address, however, so that we can engage in contact tracing efforts if we are notified of any individuals who test positive and had close contacts while in school during the days leading up to the break, or who had close contacts at athletic events over the course of the break. Please communicate vital information such as this directly to covid@shawtech.org.

    MIAA Masking Guidelines Reminder

The MIAA has asked schools to re-iterate the Winter Masking Guidelines, which clearly communicate that ”student-athletes, coaches, and officials that are indoors shall be masked,” and to remind everyone that this applies to all school events at off-campus venues as well. Thank you in advance to our student-athletes and their loved ones who attend these events as spectators, for complying with the mask requirements and positively representing Shawsheen in the process.

Reminder: Collecting Donations for Local Veterans

The Tewksbury/Wilmington Elks is taking donations to help our Veterans. Requested items include toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaving cream, socks, underwear, combs, lotion, and other basic necessities. Please help us in supporting Veterans by bringing all donations to Mrs. Comeau's room in 323 from now until Friday, January 7, 2022.

Reminder: FAFSA Information for Seniors from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (MA DESE)

Students and families are encouraged to contact their guidance counselors if they have any questions.

"Students who are thinking of attending college in the fall need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be eligible for federal, state, and local financial aid. As of early November, completion rates were down 15 percent statewide compared to the same point in 2019, and the drop has been much steeper in many urban districts. Winter break can be a good time to finish the FAFSA, and schools are encouraged to remind seniors about this important step and direct them to helpful events and resources, such as those posted at www.mass.gov/financialaid."

    Best,

    Jessica Cook
