Principal's Update
Friday, May 15, 2020
Dear Shawsheen students and families,
This past week brought with it a bright spot in the midst of the school closure when our staff gathered to cheer on our seniors as they came to the school to pick up their caps and gowns on Wednesday afternoon. Students faces were priceless as they drove into the parking lot and realized what was happening. At first they looked confused, then many of them shook their heads in embarrassment (the way they might at a parent who just told a corny joke), and finally smiles emerged as they watched their teachers, counselors, and other staff members shout and cheer for them as they drove by. This was the best day I have had since the school closure began and I know my colleagues felt the same way. If you haven't had the opportunity to do so already, I encourage you to check out pictures of this event on our social media accounts (I've included a few below as a preview). It is also great to see photos online of seniors posing next to the door banners we passed out on Wednesday.
Daily Schedule
To ensure everyone is clear on the daily schedule from now through the end of the school year, we have posted a Daily Schedule document that can be found at the following link: Daily Schedule. This document continues to identify Week 1 vs. Week 2 schedules, the class periods we suggest students focus on each day, and end-of-year events (in red) that have been finalized. We will update this document with new information on events as that becomes available. Please note that we have shifted the periods to focus on each day for the week of May 25-29 to accommodate for Memorial Day.
Promotion Plans
In the Principal's Update from this past Tuesday, I shared details about our grading plan for the rest of the year. For your reference, that information can be found at the following link: Grading Plan for the end of the 2019-2020 School Year. In that plan it states that students who are failing courses based on their year-to-date averages after quarter 3 will be sent a letter outlining plans for what they must accomplish in order to be promoted/graduate. Those plans are being sent home today by certified mail and email and the Guidance & Health Services Department will continue to be in touch with those students and their families to support them through the remainder of this school year and into the summer.
Drive-Thru Senior Promenade - Thursday, May 28, 2020
Since we cannot schedule a typical prom for the seniors this year, we are excited to announce that the senior class advisors have planned a Drive-Thru Promenade for them instead! This event will take place on the night that prom was originally scheduled, Thursday, May 28, 2020 at 5:30pm, in the parking lot at Shawsheen. Students will drive through marked areas of the parking lot and will only be allowed out of their cars at the photo area we will have set up for them. Only one car will be allowed at the photo area at a time and no more than two students can be in a vehicle together. Family members are welcome to attend as well but they must be in the same vehicle as their student as this event cannot support multiple vehicles per student. We encourage students to attend and take a photo whether they have formal prom attire or not. We will also be passing out yearbook supplements to seniors that evening. Class advisors will send out additional details directly to students and I will email more information about safety and logistics when we get closer to the event.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Best,
Jessica Cook
