Shawsheen Valley Technical High School
Friday, August 28, 2020
Dear Shawsheen Students and Parents/Guardians,
It was an exciting week here at Shawsheen with us welcoming our entire staff back to the building on Wednesday to kick off the ten days of professional development we are using to prepare for our reopening under a hybrid model on Monday, September 14. We made progress on working toward our professional development goals for these ten days which, if you haven't seen them already, are listed below:
- Ensure staff understand the health & safety rules & procedures in place and how to implement them with students;
- Provide staff with clear guidance on expectations for remote learning;
- Equip staff with knowledge and tools of inclusive practices to best support all learners, particularly our students with the highest needs;
- Equip staff with knowledge and tools regarding trauma-informed practices to support students’ mental health needs;
- Provide staff with in-depth training of Microsoft Teams and related components of other Microsoft products to ensure consistent & reliable delivery of curriculum & instruction under a remote learning model;
- Provide departments/programs with structured collaboration time to develop/revise curriculum and develop plans/expectations for department-specific needs;
- Complete Annual Mandatory Trainings
Shawsheen's educators miss working with our students and look forward to getting re-connected with them in a few weeks!
Contacting Students Recommended for 100% In-School Instruction
In our fall reopening plan we shared with you that, per the state's guidance for supporting high needs students, we would be putting together a list of students to recommend for 100% in-school instruction on both shop weeks and academic weeks. We wish we could have all of our students receive in-school instruction 100% of the time, but as we have established, it is not possible for us to safely do so. We have, however, finalized a list of students we can safely accommodate for in-school instruction 100% of the time. If your child has been recommended for 100% in-school instruction, you will receive an e-mail notification from either Mr. Jeff Albert or Mr. Matt Baione on Monday, August 31. If you receive a notification, please read it carefully, as you will be required to respond and let us know whether or not you agree and will be opting to send your child to school 100% of the time. If you do not receive an email notification, it means your child has not been recommended for in-person instruction 100% of the time. If you disagree with this decision, you may appeal it in writing to Mr. Albert at email@example.com if your child has an IEP, or to Mr. Baione at firstname.lastname@example.org if your child does not have an IEP.
Student Forum - Monday, August 31 at 3:00pm
Dr. Jackson and I will be co-hosting a virtual student forum on Monday, August 31 at 3:00pm to answer questions from students about the reopening of school this fall. Students can access that forum using the following link: SVTHS Student Forum - Monday, August 31 at 3:00pm. Similar to the Parent Forum, you do not have to download any applications to attend this event, it can be accessed through a web browser. The following 58 second video shows you how to connect to the Microsoft Live event with Microsoft Teams: How to Attend a Live Event with Microsoft Teams. We look forward to connecting with students on Monday so that we can respond to their questions about what the upcoming school year will look like.
Photo, Book Return, Parking Pass and Laptop Distribution Days for Students in Grades 10-12 -- August 31, September 1, and September 2
The dates/times are assigned as follows:
- Grade 10 = Monday, August 31, 9am - 2pm
- Grade 11 = Tuesday, September 1, 9am - 2pm
- Grade 12 = Wednesday, September 2, 9am - 2pm
If a student cannot attend on the assigned date, please reach out to Diane Cedorchuk at email@example.com to inquire about attending on a different day. You can also reach out to Ms. Cedorchuk with any questions you have. Instructions: When students arrive, they must first drive up to the photo station to take their photos on the patio outside of the school cafeteria. Students must wear masks at all times, except for when they are seated to take their photos. Once photos are complete, students must return to their vehicles and park in the parking lot before walking into the right-side entrance to the gym (doors will be labeled for entrance and exit). Once inside the gym, students must wait in line at marked spaces to ensure 6 feet of distance at all times. Students will first return the books/materials they owe at the first station. Once books/materials are returned, students will move to the second station to receive parking passes (for eligible students only), and then move to the third station to receive school-assigned laptops (for students who requested laptops only), and then they will exit the gym through the doors marked exit and return to their vehicles. Students signing out laptops will have to log on to them (at assigned stations as directed by staff) before leaving the building. If a student is not receiving a parking pass or a laptop, they will exit the gym immediately after returning their books/materials at the first station. In order to ensure parking passes are ready for students when they arrive next week, we request that students submit this form as soon as possible: SVTHS Parking Pass Form - Fall 2020. Students who receive driver's licenses later in the school year will be able to request parking passes at those times.

We look forward to safely bringing students on campus next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to take their photos, collect the materials they owe, distribute parking passes, and assign school laptops to students who need them. Thank you in advance for compliance with the safety rules we have in place.
9th Grade Student and Parent Orientation
The Guidance & Health Services Department is hosting a virtual orientation for 9th grade parents and students at 6:00pm on Wednesday, September 2nd. Click here for the link to the event
We have been closely following the information coming out from the MIAA regarding athletics but will not be making any final decisions about fall athletics until the work of the MIAA Covid-19 Task Force is complete and all decisions have been finalized for us to review, which we anticipate will occur early next week. We understand this is an important issue to many of our students and families, and it is important to us as well. We want to have all of the information before making any decisions to ensure our plans for the fall are as informed as possible.
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has updated their guidance for co-op and will now be allowing students in health careers programs to participate in co-op at clinical placements and medical facilities provided the appropriate safeguards are in place. Students interested in pursuing co-op positions in those environments must follow the same process for establishing co-op jobs as was communicated recently from our Co-op Director, Mr. Richard Lavoie. Please reach out to Mr. Lavoie at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions.
Our School Nutrition Director, Mr. Robert Roach, has sent home communications to families about the cashless system we will be using for school lunches this year as well as our Grab and Go breakfast/lunch offering. Those communications can be reviewed at the links below. Please contact Mr. Roach at email@example.com with any questions.
- ASAP: contact Ms. Schrimp at firstname.lastname@example.org (if you have not done so already) if your child will need to borrow a laptop from the school.
- ASAP: fill out the following form to opt for 100% remote learning : SVTHS Parent Form - Opting for 100% Remote Instruction.
- Monday, September 14, 2020: First day of school for students - Revised 2020-2021 School Calendar.
As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns you have. Have an excellent weekend!
