Shawsheen Valley Technical High School

Dear Shawsheen Students and Parents/Guardians,
A Successful Week 1!
This week we welcomed 10th and 12th grade students back into the building for shop while we introduced 9th and 11th grade students to their remote classroom environments, and with the completion of this week, all students have now been introduced to what both shop and academic weeks will look like this fall. It was exciting to see sophomores re-enter their permanent shops for the second week ever, since they were only in their permanent shops for one week before schools closed in March. It was equally exciting to see a significant number of seniors report to the co-op office, starting on the first day of school, to finalize co-op employment in their fields. Meanwhile, freshmen and juniors started to build relationships with and learn how to navigate virtual learning environments with their Academic, Related, and Support Services Teachers. Despite the inherent challenges associated with this switch to remote learning, it has been heart-warming to hear teachers reflect on how adaptable, resilient, and flexible students have been and to hear students share how supportive, understanding, and welcoming teachers have been as everyone learns to navigate this situation.
Still, we recognize that there have been difficulties encountered as we trouble-shoot issues with devices and connectivity that have emerged along the way. We will continue to address these issues as we become aware of them and appreciate the patience everyone has exhibited as we get the school year up and running. As a reminder, Ed Tech support continues to be available to support students & families experiencing technical issues accessing Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Teams, and the Aspen Family Portal. Please use the links below to access assistance as needed.

Important Health & Safety Reminders
As students begin to feel more comfortable being back in the school building, I just want to remind everyone of the essential Health & Safety measures we have in place to reduce the chances of exposure and transmission of Covid-19.
- Masks/face covering must be worn, covering both the mouth and nose, at all times while on school property (except during lunches, water breaks, and mask breaks). Students are expected to keep their masks/face coverings on when dismissed from school and until they get into their vehicles (or until after they exit the school bus, if taking school bus transportation).
- Hand washing/sanitizing should occur frequently throughout the day.
- Physical Distancing must be employed with a minimum of 3 feet between individuals when masks/face coverings are worn and a minimum of 6 feet between individuals during lunch, water breaks, or mask breaks.
Message from the School Nurses
The School Nurses would like to remind students and parents/guardians that students should remain home when they are sick and if they are exhibiting any of the symptoms associated with Covid-19. Students who remain home for this reason can have those absences validated (and in some cases may be able to complete work remotely if they are well enough) per the attendance information outlined in the Supplement to the 2020-2021 SVTHS Student Handbook.
Many of the SAT tests scheduled this year have been cancelled due to Covid-19 and this impacted a number of Shawsheen students. This past Wednesday, the Guidance & Health Services Department proctored the SAT at Shawsheen for 84 seniors. Mr. Baione and the Guidance Counselors were happy to provide this opportunity for our students and we encourage anyone with outstanding questions about the SAT to contact Mr. Baione at firstname.lastname@example.org. The Guidance & Health Services Department will continue to share relevant college & career information with seniors throughout the fall to support them as they start to make decisions about the paths they will take after graduation.
We kicked off the fall sports season at Shawsheen this week with Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Cross Country and Golf. We had an excellent turn-out for try-outs and appreciate the interest and effort of all students!
Voluntary Football Workouts
We are offering voluntary Football Workouts for interested students. An informational meeting will be held on Monday, September 28th at 2:45PM out on the Baseball JV Grass Field for anyone interested in learning more. Those interested MUST be registered on FamilyID and have a current physical uploaded to their FamilyID account. If you already registered for Fall Football YOU DO NOT need to re-register, please email the Athletics Administrative Assistant at email@example.com to let her know you’re interested.
- Workouts will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 2:45-4:30 on the grass baseball field (next to the Stadium Football Field).
- Student-Athletes are not required to attend all of the workouts, especially due to any issues with Co-op or transportation.
- Workouts will focus on strength, speed, flexibility, conditioning, Football skills and drills, etc.
- Football coaches will oversee these workouts.
- Students should wear regular workout/gym attire, bring their own water bottles and follow proper COVID-19 protocols such as wearing masks (PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN MASKS) and social distancing.
PLEASE NOTE: We have no new information regarding Football in the Fall II Season. Information will not be available until early February at the earliest.
Clubs & Activities
Now that we have started to settle into the school year, I will be meeting with club & activity advisors on Wednesday to review a process for safely offering both in-person and remote opportunities for students to participate in the various clubs and activities Shawsheen has to offer. After that meeting, information about those opportunities and how to access them will be shared with students and parents/guardians. Stay tuned for more information - I hope many of you will participate!
Disinfecting and Sanitizing at Shawsheen
We take disinfecting and sanitizing seriously at Shawsheen and take a number of different approaches to ensuring spaces are cleaned in-between uses. We recently shared a brief video of one of those approaches on our social media pages, to show how members of our Maintenance Department use our new Victory Professional Cordless Electrostatic Backpack Sprayer to disinfect our classrooms and shops each night. This new equipment can disinfect up to 23,000 square feet on a single tank of fluid. Check out the video on our Twitter page!
Mid-Term for Quarter 1
On our school calendar, Friday, October 2 is currently listed as the mid-term for quarter one. Effective immediately we are changing that date and moving it back a week to Friday, October 9. Official mid-term progress reports will be posted in Aspen by Friday, October 16. The first quarter ends on Friday, November 13 and quarter one report cards will be posted in Aspen by Friday, November 20.
I hope everyone takes some time to enjoy the beautiful weather expected over the weekend!
